Competitions and Events

Gloucestershire Netball runs a variety of different leagues and competitions for clubs based within the county. Not only do we attempt to encourage junior and mass participation amongst the sport, we also maintain a pathway for individuals and teams to progress to regional and national levels of competition.

Our competitions are managed by our Adult Competition and Junior Competition working groups.

County League

The County League is our main adult competition and was established in 1972. It now consists of six divisions, including the Premier Division. This year the season runs from September 2016-April 2017 and matches are played on Saturdays.

The top three divisions also play indoors at a central venue.

At the end of the season, the top team in the Premier Division will be eligible to enter the Regional League play-offs to qualify for the Netball South West Regional League 3.

Junior League

The Junior League comprises U12, U13, U14 and U16 sections. A number of our clubs enter multiple teams in different age groups.

This year the season runs from October 2016 - March 2017 and matches are played once a month (on average) on Sundays.

The top two teams from both the U14 and U16 sections progress to the Netball South West U14 Regional Tournaments and U16 Regional League the same year, with a chance to qualify for the England Netball national finals.

Schools Competitions

We run the initial county round of the National Schools Tournament, for U19, U16 and U14 age groups. The county rounds will take place in October or November. The winners and runners up of all three age groups will represent Gloucestershire in the Netball South West regional round of the National Schools Tournament the following January. The winners and runners up from each age group in this round will then represent the South West region in the national finals.

In order to maximise the competition available to juniors, we also run a May Dent Tournament for U15 school teams within Gloucestershire. The tournament was first introduced in 1979 and named in honour of a former Chair of Gloucestershire Netball and Mayor of Cheltenham.

Primary Schools participate in district leagues, playing the High 5 format of the game. The winners of each district play in a county final.

Bateman and Per Ardua handicap knockout competitions

Established in 1960, the Bateman Shield and Per Ardua competitions are open to all clubs entering our County League. Teams play full-length matches with an initial handicap, based on their position in the County League. Matches are played at various dates throughout the season, culminating in quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals rounds played towards the end of the season.

County Tournaments

Before the start of our County League, teams are invited to play in pre-season tournaments. They play a number of short games during the day. Many use this opportunity to play competitive netball before the season starts.

This year, we also plan to run an open Fast Net tournament and Versatility tournament towards the end of the season.

Summer League

During the Summer we run a friendly evening league at an outside central venue on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. This is also an opportunity for new players and beginner umpires to practice in a non-competitive environment.
